Finished Knits: Airy Wrap Around

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Finished the sweater last night at Katie’s.  It still needs to be blocked,  but here’s the pic (click for full-size, I may reduce the size soon1481kb pic!):

Airy Wrap-Around from_Fitted_Knits_

Working on some knitting charts.  I used some of the space invaders chart from another site, but I didn’t like the results.  Eight bit pixmaps do not translate directly to knitting, so I’ll be putting up some of those charts later this week.  Also working on a tiny peace chart for wristbands.   There’s going to be a peace rally at 1PM on March 17th in Lincoln, and I’d like to make one for all of our friends who go.  They’ll be knitted in Support Our Troops Yellow, just like Tony Orlando prescribed.

Flying squirrels, french cinema, and Oracular Divination

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Worked on the husband’s webpage for the past two days.  I’m not linking to it because the changes have not gone live yet.  Created my first template, and used Neil Gaimain’s Oracular Diviniation Machine to guide me on my design.  (I onced used Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, but they apply less to non-musical inspiration every year.) Tyrone has a wonderful picture of an industrial deteriorating skyline (street signs, broken-down roller coasters), and in the hazy backround are the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  I’ve done some wacky websites in my past, and so the main theme of this one is to keep it simple.  Tyrone’s going to have to manage it after it goes live, so that will help him too.

I didn’t know the website would turn out to be so blue, but it definetley suits Tyrone.  Look for it going live either Friday or Saturday!  I’ll link to it then.

In knitting news, finished 20 more inches of mohair lace.  Seamed the arms so I can wear it while I’m knitting.  I’m 10 inches from being DONE!

Oscar Weekend

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Usually I spend much of my time at the sewing machine on Oscar Weekend.  This year I knitted ~50 inches of mohair lace instead.  I should be done with the Airy Wrap-Around on Wednesday.  I ran out of the soft blue yarn (like I thought I would), but luckily I had enough to finish a particular section.  I really like the substitution.

On the other crafty side, I can show you a preview of the seedling starter (aka the original solar collector) I made last weekend.  My friend Sarah gave me one for Christmas, and so far I started cilantro and the lemon basil is coming up now.  I planted parsley and thyme  in these:  Seed Starters

The thyme is already up after 7 days!  I planed some rosemary in an old bubble bath bottle yesterday.

long cold winter

I’ve got Cinderella on repeat in my head today, and I don’t know why. It needs to get out instead of that high-pitched voice going “don’t know what you got, till its go-ooone.”

STill working on the Airy Wrap-Around. SHOCKED that the pattern has you do 12 inches X 90 inches of st/lace. I figured that there would be some sort of decreasing before 45 inches of the st/lace on each side. But that’s what’s cool about these patterns — the surprises in construction you don see coming. I’m going to run out of the blue color, but I have a relly cool contrasting mohair to supplement. One picture of the Airy Wrap-Around (I’ll take more this weekend):  Airy Wrap-Around Shoulders

Compiling more photos for a weekly “SWATCHY” feature here.

real world avalanche

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

I’ve been swamped at work, and when that happens, posting to the blog suffers.  There will be some new pictures up, and maybe some site rennovation this weekend becase it is supposed to blizzard here again on Sunday.

Two nights of knitting have yielded mucho sleeve progress on the airy-wrap around.  If I could knit through lunch today, I’d be started on the front.

My husband has been working on his own website content, and even has some ideas on a theme, so maybe I’ll be working on that this weekend.

Oh, and maybe band practice.  Did I mention it is supposed to blizzard?  Maybe I should make soup instead.

I’ll leave you with a newly-posted pic of Jackson’s Beer Can hat.  Itended up being very1997 cat-in-the-hat-ish.  I crocheted it out of the dreaded Red Heart Acrylic.  The super-high-skill level/super-lazy writing pattern:

1. HDC around each can panel (Jackson cut the holes). RED

2. HDC all of the panels together. WHITE

3. HDC once around the top and bottom of the panel band. WHITE

4. on the topside, HDC around and around alternating colors and subjectively decreasing.

5. on the brim, HDC around in RED, subjectively increasing.

He wanted one in Green Bay colors too. If I were to make one, I’d use 5 panels instead of 6 so the hat wasn’t so big, maybe put some sort of elasticity in there.

Cast on for the Airy Wrap-Around from _Fitted_Knits_ this weekend.  Chose the 2nd size from the left.  I’m almost done with the back (4-5 rows to go).  The diagram says the back should measure 19.5 inches, but I’m only at 15 inches, and totally on gauge.  Where did I lose ~13 rows?

The regular Lincoln girls gone mild/uppity knitters/whatever we’re calling ourselves these days are having a secret meeting tonight.  I’ll be able to get a few other sets of eyes to look at it.  Hopefully I won’t have to frog (re-knit) very much.

Put more knitting pictures up this weekend:

Knitted gifts for xmas!

Sometimes I wish knitting had a good “insert here” function.

Lock-yourself-in-the-house sort of weekend

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

I almost jumped out of bed this morning.  It just feels like I have so many things to do.  Last night I finished off my first simple pattern that I’m going to submit to an on-line knitting magazine.  That sends so many other things cascading into action.

Today was one of maybe 3 days where I have been out of bed before my husband.  I did some Rodney Yee yoga to try and focus, and then work on the main site.  In looking for pics for the site (and my husband’s site) I started uploading a backlog to flickr, realizing that I have an new gallery too.  So many things to track.

For tomorrow, I’ll probably tweak the site a bit, maybe work up another simple pattern from my backlog, work on a cool felted purse with my sewing machine, and possibly document how to make terrariums out of old clear lotion bottles for instructables.

The post where I become a professional

It’s out!  The new Prairie Schooner shirt!  They’re grey/light blue print or brown with a sort of neon blue print.  This is the first thing I had a hand in that massive amounts of people will wear.  Excitement, indeed!

I’m not sure where they’re on sale, but I know you can subscribe to the Prairie Schooner.

In the interest of full disclosure, my husband is  a Senior Fiction Reader, and my cousin Erin Flanagan is the ex-Managing Editor/now-Senior Reader.

Project Pictures: 2003 Backlog

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Posted most of the 2003 knitting projects I had in Julee’s Gallery.

Reading many different articles about writing patterns and submissions. I have held back a few of my design photos for this reason. Not set on the gallery design, and I really must take down all of those “Add to Cart” links.

Finished Bias Fair-Isle: a Retrospective

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Pictures of Teva Durham’s Bias Fair Isle from Loop-d-Loop:

Bias Fair-Isle Sweater, CloseupBias Fair-Isle Sweater, Side View

The weather has been sub-zero around here, so I wore this sweater for a couple days in a row.    The yarn I used was Lett-Lopi (Icelandic Lopi Lite).  I’d tell you more about the ball band, but I don’t read Icelandic.  I did go very cheap on the yarn (less than $5 for a 50g ball), but I had to order 14 balls.   This left the sweater a bit scratchy, but I don’t mind the extra layer when it is this cold. I made the small, and still had a bunch of yarn left over.  I blame this on my previous pesudo-continental knitting technique, which left my gauge a little long at times.

I really like the high wasitline and the shape of the sweater, but I’ve already got 3 “are you trying to hide a prenancy in that sweater?” cracks.  Solution?  I need to knit more high-waistline long sweaters. They are great for hiding an unintended plumber’s crack too.
Moving on to two projects: de-coding a knitted hood I made 3 years ago with a weird curvy short-row technique, and testing some random knitting theories.  I’ll explain more about these later.  I also need to work on my finished object archives.  One reason why I’ve joined this blogitty world is to compare thoughts or lend help on projects I’ve had the chance to experience.
