first day of school

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

My mother always took a picture of us kids on the first day of school. I don’t go to school anymore, but my husband does. Here he is on his first day of his last year ever as a student!

Iron CRAFT CHALLENGE: Ring Bearer Wedding Pillow

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Time for something exiciting! A friend of mine, Sara, is getting married in a month!

She approached me to help craft the Ring Bearer pillow for the wedding. I was very exited by the challenge. The colors for the wedding are green apple and coffee bean brown.

On Thursday, Sara dropped off the materials she favored:

We both dig the brocade fabric. Thinking about doing a 12-14 inch pillow with piping in the dark brown. Possibly embellishing the flowers with crewel or embroidery. I’m going to ruminate on it for a few days and see what comes to me. One of the coolest parts about this whole challenge is that I’ll be using the sewing machine that our mutual friend Sarah got Tyrone and I for a wedding gift (hahah). So in a way, the gift is also a gift for Sara’s wedding.

This challenge makes me want to have “odyssey of the mind” craft challenge with my girlfriends one night:
“you have two toilet paper rolls, 5 used (but clean) socks, some yarn, and some floral wire…make the coolest lampshade you can.” You get the picture. hahaha.

My-So-Called-Scarf update

Friday, August 24th, 2007

I’ve been knitting like crazy for a couple of days. We have progress!

Looking for a fun knit skirt pattern for this fall/winter to use some of the cool brown alpaca from Woodstock, NY. After that may possibly design a Nebraska sweater. I really wanted to use the corn yarn, but they don’t have it in red.

it is time to start hoping for a freeze again.

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

OK OK OK, so don’t start wishing for that freeze until the crops are in, but after that, all bets are off! I’m on the super-duper-24-hour-release allergy medication right now.

Started on a scarf last night with this fantastic yarn I got last winter from my sister-in-law:

The yarn is Manos del Uruguay wool. The pattern I’m working is the My-So-Called-Scarf Pattern. Started it last night at the knitting club/stitch’n'bitch/excuse to get out with the girls on a Tuesday night. It had been pretty slow over the summer, but now that school has started up, we should be back to the regular schedule.

Put the finishing touches on it last night. Worked on it a little at the lake while having a sort of relaxing anniversary picnic on Sunday. The sweater is from _The_Happy_Hooker_ crochet book.

Started working on this in the Catskills. It is an excellent summer sweater for dealing with extreme cold temperatures in the office.

I’ll put up a modeling picture soon, along with possible next project!

hooked on half sweaters.

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

No pictures yet, but I’m about 3/4 done with the half sweater on the front of this book.

In garden news, Ty bumped the tomato plant when he mowed yesterday, and 3 green tomatoes fell off, so he added them to the eggplant parmesan last night.  Tasty!

Took a break from crafting to just repair some of my clothes for a change.  Fixed a bunch of seams in summer clothes last night.  Next up winter clothes.  Saw an episode of a show called _Flight_of_the_Conchords_.  The characters wear 70s inspired shirts and jackets and horn-rimmed glasses, just like Tyrone.  It makes me want to embroider a country-cut shirt for him.

Instead of yellow roses from Texas, I’d have to embroider some sort of NY based hemlock pattern or something.  Keep your eyes open for hemlock stick figures.

Fun second-hand needlework shopping.

When Tyrone and I went to Denver, I got these. MMMM. yellow.

I think I’m going to put these table scarves in the living room. Dig the crochet lace detail!
