and we’re back, 2009

Sometimes I just don’t blog for a couple of weeks. At other times, I don’t blog because I don’t want people to know I’m away from the tower so they can burgle it. This time I can claim both motivations.

Tyrone and I just got back from the Catskills. We left Huntersfield Mountain at 5:30 AM to stand in line and check in at 8:05AM. We felt OK, because all of the departure boards indicated our flight was delayed. The flight, due to leave at 8:35, finally left when the runway opened at 11:45AM.

We missed our connecting flight because we hadn’t left Albany yet! We ended up getting routed to Baltimore, St. Louis, and then on to Little Rock at 6PM CST. Our luggage didn’t make it, and the dry air proved that we did have colds. The airline won’t deliver our bags because we were 25 minutes late for a flight that was delayed 3+ hours. Even if we weren’t late, I think we would qualify as “voluntarily separated” from our luggage, and they probably wouldn’t deliver it anyway.

We went home and had a New Year’s Eve concoction of Rum and Emergen-C, a cold preventative.

Today we are medicating before the Cornhuskers vs Clemson game, and I am making a batch of black-eyed peas.

On Halloween, some friends told us they eat luck black-eyed peas every New Year’s Day. In my family, it is traditional to eat cabbage. We speculated why these foods are considered lucky, when my friend David looked up the black-eyed peas. Apparently during the Civil War, the northern soldiers burned all of the south’s food reserves. They didn’t know what black-eyed peas were, and assumed they were animal food. Black-eyed peas were lucky because the people in the south had something to eat.
