Crafty Books: 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I’ve been posting so much about fiction writers and poetry writers, that I almost forgot this is first and foremost a craft blog!

I’m super excited about my fellow former Nebraskan crafter Garth Johnson’s new book 100 Ideas for Creative Reuse, due out in November.

He’s the author of the Extreme Craft blog, and posted today that he received his copy of the book.

I zipped over to amazon.com to see if any of my projects made the cover, or if I made it into the first few pages browsable by Amazon’s Look Inside! feature. After a few clicks on the Surprise Me! feature, and there is one of my projects at #242!

One of my favorite things about this book is that it has a single picture of each creative reuse project. There are no patterns and no instructions. It is a book of ideas, but it is also a fantastic book of possibilities for people who consider crafting as interesting and as engaging as solving puzzles or gigantic systems of equations. The picture of the finished item is proof that the puzzle can be solved, or that a solution exists. As a crafter, you can infer a few things from each picture, but the path you take in utilizing the creative reuse idea is completely up to you!

Earlier today at my new job, I had to fill out a section of my Corporate Resume about my published works and publications. I wonder if they’ll let me add my recycled sweater coozie to that list? I’ll post a little about my job this weekend.

Earth day, birthdays and the natural state

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Well a bunch has happened since my last post. On Sunday, Tyrone and I rode our his’n'her matching yellow Schwinn bicycles to Lincoln’s Earth Day Celebration at Antelope Park. Our neighbor Barbara organized it, and had been organizing it for weeks before. There were a lot of good resources there for recycling and community supported agriculture, and alternative energy, which would have been great to immerse ourselves into, but,

….we’re moving to Arkansas in June. It is official, and my last day at my current employer is on Friday. We will be moving into a reclaimed cement mixer there, Covington Towers. We’ll have the tower on the left. I don’t have an offical new job yet, so keep an eye on this blog, as I may start selling some crafts. If you need any custom crafting (coozies, bags, simple sewing), leave me a note on this blog as it goes directly to my email. Personalized crafts make great wedding gifts, and handmade recycled items reduce our imports from China, as well as keep bulk out of the land fill. (steps off soapbox)

It was my brother’s birthday this weekend too. This Christmas, his girlfriend Jari donated a bunch of 100% wool sweaters and blue plastic bags to my craft bank. One of the sweaters was blue and white, and one of the first gifts my brother ever gave Jari. It also didn’t fit quite right, but Tom didn’t find this out until a few years later. So when Tom and Jari’s birthdays came around, (YES THEY ARE TOM AND JARI! YES, I tried to embroider the beloved cat and mouse on them.) I decided they needed something special:

Tom’s coozie had an isotope design on the back. He works with nuclear power, so I like to think he would enjoy Homer Simpson accessories. Check out the French Knot detail/thumb rest nucleus:

The earth week festivities conclude with our Arbor Day party on Friday.  Not sure what I’m going to make for it yet.

Coozie alert

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I was hanging out with my friends at a coffee shop this weekend, making a coozie gift for someone’s birthday when my friend Sarah said, “I thought you were going to make me one of those?”

When I was done with the first, I started on the second. Here is a picture of it at play at the Lied Transplant Center/Hotel:

PG-13 Crafts for a Cure

Friday, March 30th, 2007

My friend Shannon is walking the Avon Breast Cancer Marathon on June 24th.  If you support breast cancer causes, I would encourage you to make a donation to her team, the “Denver Divas”.

To help her raise money and awareness, I made this PG-13 craft for her. Please click through to view it.  It is safe for work, but uses a slogan coined by my friend Jackson in his series of one-off car magnet ribbons may not be suitable for viewers under thirteen.

After all of NPR fundraising messages this week, I’m contemplating making one of these special crafts “as a thank you” to anyone who donates $100 or more to Shannon’s Team.  If anyone is interested in receiving this special craft offer, and if you would actually use it, please send me an email or reply with your email here.
