better dead than sooner red

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Football has always been in my life. My father was a coach and I grew up in Nebraska. My sister, who was supposed to be a boy, could out-punt all of the boys in high school. We also has a basketball hoop set at 9ft, so it was almost like we were set up to fail in basketball so we would pay more attention to football.

They say that Arkansans (or Arkansawyers) are pretty serious about football too. I think it is wise to have a mascot that could very well be the tastiest thing on the planet (hog). They’ve got one thing completely wrong though. They wear Oklahoma Sooner Red, and they don’t even realize it. It may have been a different color in the past, but it is definitely not a collegiate red or maroon. The Arkansas color is only color between the two colors that Nebraskans (and probably Kansonians, Coloradans, Missourities, Texish, and Ioweegians) quickly identify as Sooner Red.

Today is a big day in the world of football. Texas plays the Cornhuskers for the Big XII Championship in a few hours. I don’t see the corn winning, but if they do, it could seriously mess up the BCS. Seriously messing up the Bowl Championship series is the first step to a national playoff system, LIKE EVERY OTHER SPORT, or EVERY OTHER FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

So in cheering for the Huskers tonight, not only am I cheering on my own heritage and culture, I am cheering on the evolution of college football.

Crafty Books: 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I’ve been posting so much about fiction writers and poetry writers, that I almost forgot this is first and foremost a craft blog!

I’m super excited about my fellow former Nebraskan crafter Garth Johnson’s new book 100 Ideas for Creative Reuse, due out in November.

He’s the author of the Extreme Craft blog, and posted today that he received his copy of the book.

I zipped over to amazon.com to see if any of my projects made the cover, or if I made it into the first few pages browsable by Amazon’s Look Inside! feature. After a few clicks on the Surprise Me! feature, and there is one of my projects at #242!

One of my favorite things about this book is that it has a single picture of each creative reuse project. There are no patterns and no instructions. It is a book of ideas, but it is also a fantastic book of possibilities for people who consider crafting as interesting and as engaging as solving puzzles or gigantic systems of equations. The picture of the finished item is proof that the puzzle can be solved, or that a solution exists. As a crafter, you can infer a few things from each picture, but the path you take in utilizing the creative reuse idea is completely up to you!

Earlier today at my new job, I had to fill out a section of my Corporate Resume about my published works and publications. I wonder if they’ll let me add my recycled sweater coozie to that list? I’ll post a little about my job this weekend.

The ghost of football past

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

This year Tyrone and I got student tickets to the Nebraska Cornhuskers games. Last weekend was not a happy time for us. The Huskers were beat by Missouri 41-6, and the Broncos were beat by the Chargers 41-3. But these are pictures from happier times:

Here is the view from our seats:

Here is a pre-USC game peace rally picture.  The USC fans were really wonderful, and some even joined the march.  On the way back to the car, some USC fans even stopped us to ask if we got on ESPN Gameday.  We told them it was a pro-Huskers/pro-peace sign.  They were all very excited for us, and I think the were surprised to see anything like that in Nebraska.  One kind older Trojan even remarked, “I guess there are a few things that are more important than football.  Keep up the good work.”
