I use antlers in all of my decorating

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Used the last of my Xmas gift certificate from my friend Katie on buttons for the Green Gable Hoodie. I went to the local knitting store, The Knitting Shop (formerly threads, no web site).

Saw a number of buttons that I really liked in a mother of pearl, and horn shaped wood. All of them would have detracted from the cables on the sweater. Just as I was about to pick out two tortise shell half-barrell shaped buttons, a glint of red caught my eye. The button case had a number of 1/4 inch thick, drilled, and red-varnished antlers. I really loved how they looked like tree rings, but the marrow on the inside looked web-like where a concentric core should be. So here it is:

As always, click to enlarge! Got the sweater done just in time for spring. There are still quite a few chilly days in Nebraska (including today). I wore the sweater to the Easter celebration at my parents’ house. No, my father does not have any spare antlers if you like the antler buttons. He won’t even give up the one antler that stayed velvet on the buck he shot with a hormonal imbalance, even though everyone makes fun of it. But as they say at the end of the Conan The Barbarian movies, “that is another story.”

oscar oscar oscar

I seem to always be making clothes in late Feb/early March during Oscar season. In the past, it has been on the sewing machine, but now I’m in the home stretch on the Green Gable Sweater. It is Oscar the Grouch colored, so I think it qualifies.

Got the arms attached, and worked through the 2 pages of yoke. So far only one portion of the instructions made absolutely no sense, which is actually great. Looking at the length of the yoke instructions, it appeared really intimidating.

Really enjoyed looking at all of the dresses and the awards last night. Super psyched at how multi-cultural the awards ceremony and movies have become. None of the actors who won are American! I was really excited by this, as I really enjoy foreign films. It would be really sad if a performance such as Marion Cotillard’s Edith Piaf didn’t win just because it isn’t in English. She did such an amazing job in that movie portraying and singing Piaf’s life from ages 18 to a super-worn out age 48.

Craftsmas break, looking ahead

I’ve got several bigger projects on the horizion, and I finished the Aran Skirt last night. Pictures to follow tomorrow!

Up next is the Green Gable Hoodie. Thank goodness Redlipstick.net posted a link to the pattern before Vogue Knitting snapped it up! I bought the yarn for it 2 months ago with a gift certificate Tyrone got me for my birthday.

Back to the CRAFTSMAS pictures! I think I may try to sell this pattern? Of course, the yarn is free, so that makes it pretty much unsellable. I have the pattern written somewhere, so maybe I’ll post it to the site. I made Ruth and Sara yoga mat bags!

I really have a soft spot in my heart for that recycled-bag plastic “yarn”. The more colors, the better. Ruth got an orange stripe in hers since it was her wedding color.
